Jungkook’s insomnia and sleep deprivation

Jungkook’s insomnia and sleep deprivation make private distress visible in his body and behavior, and eventually contribute to a dangerous accident. His nights without rest leave him restless and angry, draw him toward Shelby Anderson Barnum even when she has withdrawn from him, and culminate in a fainting spell at a red light after alcohol and a prolonged lack of sleep combine. The hospital brings a rare stretch of good sleep, but not evidence that the underlying problem has ended.

Episodes and Symptoms

At 2:30 a.m. on January 16, Jungkook is still unable to sleep. He sits up, puts his head in his hands, gets out of bed, paces across the room, and strikes the wall. The passage renders his self-directed anger as a string of escalating internal commands to hit harder and keep going, turning wakefulness into a confrontation with the destructive identity he fears he represents. He shakes his head as if trying to dislodge the demons laughing at him, then opens the window, smokes a cigarette quickly, and shuts out the winter cold. The sequence is physical and repetitive: pacing, striking, smoking, and still no sleep.

His sleeplessness continues after this burst of activity. He leaves his room and walks through the dormitory to Shelby’s room, number 33, where he knocks softly and waits. When she opens the door, he tells her that he cannot sleep. Her brief response and evident indifference anger him, but he holds back rather than risk saying something he may regret. When she reminds him that she intends to ignore him as he ignored her for five days, she locks the door and returns to bed. Jungkook goes back to his own room, lies down, and again cannot fall asleep. The failed attempt to reach her does not resolve the immediate problem: he remains awake and alone with it.

The Dispute and His Attempts to Reach Shelby

In a later message, Jungkook acknowledges that he acted badly and that he knows he should give Shelby time, but says he cannot manage to do so. He describes two or three nights without sleep, his frustration at not having her beside him, and his unfamiliarity with pursuing someone. He also asks to discuss in person what happened at the dormitory and Ares Garden, rather than attempt to settle it by message, and says he will give her as much time as she wants. The message makes the conflict’s role in his distress explicit without reducing the insomnia to a single cause: separation and unresolved events are what he connects to his inability to rest, while his own choice to contact her presses against the space she has requested.

When Jungkook is later treated after an accident, the physician explains that the alcohol he consumed compounded his lack of sleep. Shelby tells the physician that Jungkook has been without sleep for about a week and thinks their argument may be responsible. Her statement is an account of the duration and a tentative explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis of the cause. The physician’s explanation identifies a more immediate physical danger: alcohol and accumulated sleep deprivation had together impaired Jungkook before he fainted.

Accident and Hospital Recovery

The accident occurs while Jungkook is at a red light. He loses consciousness there, and his vehicle is involved in a road accident. The physician reports that he has no serious injuries, only bruises and scrapes, and calls it fortunate that Jungkook fainted while stopped at the light. The scene gives the insomnia a consequence beyond discomfort or strained relationships: his exhaustion, made worse by alcohol, leaves him vulnerable to sudden incapacitation in traffic.

The physician advises that Jungkook eat when he wakes, rest as much as possible, avoid physical exertion, and take no alcohol or other substances. He also recommends keeping stressful situations away and having someone stay with him. Shelby asks whether she can spend the night in Jungkook’s room. After the physician leaves, she takes his left hand and gently strokes it, worrying that the accident might have been avoided if she had let him explain himself. Her guilt is presented as her own fear, not proof that the dispute caused the accident; the physician has already pointed to sleep deprivation and alcohol as contributing conditions.

Jungkook opens his eyes at around ten in the morning. He has slept unusually well, though only because he is in the hospital after the accident. He notices that Shelby is holding his hand, turns toward her sleeping face, and gently strokes her hand, relieved to see her and apprehensive about how she will react when she wakes. This calm, protected interval contrasts with his earlier pacing and failed attempts to sleep, but the narrative does not establish it as a cure. It is one restorative night in the immediate aftermath of a crisis.

Significance and Limits

The episodes trace a clear escalation: restlessness becomes repeated wakefulness, the sleeplessness accompanies a relationship rupture, and the combination of exhaustion and alcohol ends in loss of consciousness. The midnight visit to Shelby’s locked room shows how Jungkook’s distress pushes him toward contact even when he recognizes that she wants distance. His message likewise pairs an admission that he should give her time with an inability to tolerate the separation. Insomnia therefore appears not only as a bodily condition but also as part of a period in which emotional strain disrupts his judgment and his capacity to care for himself.

The narrative does not supply a medical diagnosis, establish the full history of Jungkook’s sleep problems, or show that the hospital rest permanently resolves them. Instead, it gives concrete markers: a 2:30 a.m. episode of pacing and wall-striking, his own account of several sleepless nights, Shelby’s estimate of about a week, and a physician’s warning that alcohol has worsened the deprivation. That variation in duration underscores the severity of the period without making the accounts identical. The temporary sleep after the accident closes the immediate crisis on a note of physical closeness, while leaving the longer course of Jungkook’s insomnia unstated.
